Chrysalis Performing Arts Center
Spring 2022 - First Year
Just as the chrysalis cocoons the caterpillar’s transformation into a butterfly, this theater fosters a creative and dynamic environment that is conducive to students’ artistic growth. Through logical program organization interwoven with elements of biomimicry inspired by the chrysalis and a series of rooftop milkweed gardens, the theater space offers flexibility in terms of stage depth while remaining accessible to students and patrons with all levels of mobility. Cocooning the core of the building, the undulating facade is made up of thin vertical slats of wood between which lights are hidden, creating the illusion of a glowing amorphous structure at night, while simultaneously acting as a refuge and habitat for monarch butterflies every spring.
